Why do so many buyers in Moldova choose second-hand?

A new forklift costs between 10,000 and 35,000 EUR depending on capacity and type. For a small or medium-sized company that moves goods a few times a day, this can be a difficult investment to justify - especially if the budget is limited or the equipment is needed urgently for a few-month project. This is where the interest in refurbished forklifts comes from: technically restored second-hand machines, immediately available and at 35-55% of the price of a new equivalent.

But refurbished doesn't mean the same thing everywhere. There are forklifts imported from the west with serious overhaul and partial warranty, and there are forklifts freshly painted and sold as refurbished without any real inspection. This guide explains the difference, what to check, and in what situations each option makes sense for your business.

What does truly refurbished mean?

A seriously refurbished forklift goes through at least the following stages:

  • Hydraulic system inspection - checking the pump, cylinders, and seals
  • Engine overhaul - compression, filter, oil, spark plugs or injectors
  • Braking system check - service and parking brakes
  • Mast and lifting chain inspection - roller wear, rail condition
  • Transmission check - gearbox, clutch
  • Tire condition - wear, cracks, deformation
  • Load function tests - testing with weights at nominal capacity

At HandlerKraft, refurbished forklifts undergo technical inspection and safety certification before sale, and specifications can be adapted on request: tires, forks, attachments, cabins. The current catalog includes 20 models from top Japanese brands (Komatsu, Toyota) and HELI, with capacities between 1T and 3T.

HandlerKraft Tip

Before any second-hand forklift purchase, request the technical inspection document and the operating hours history. A 2010 Japanese forklift with 3,000 hours can be more reliable than a 2015 one with 8,000 hours of intensive use. Hours matter more than the year of manufacture.

Advantages of a refurbished forklift

  • Price - 35-55% lower than the new equivalent. A refurbished Komatsu FG20 (2T, gasoline) costs around 8,000 EUR at HandlerKraft. The new HELI 1.8T electric equivalent starts from 14,900 EUR.
  • Immediate availability. New forklifts are delivered in 4-12 weeks. Refurbished ones are in stock and can be delivered in a few days.
  • Reliability of Japanese brands. Komatsu and Toyota have earned a reputation for longevity over decades. A well-maintained Japanese engine runs 15,000-20,000 hours without major overhaul.
  • Low replacement cost. If a refurbished machine has a major breakdown after 3 years, you have fully amortized it and can buy another similar one.
  • Ideal for seasonal or occasional use. It does not justify investing in new equipment for a 3-month season.

Risks and limitations of refurbished forklifts

  • Unknown history. You don't always know how it was used or if the overhaul was superficial.
  • Limited or no warranty. New forklifts come with a 12-24 month warranty. Refurbished ones usually have a 3-6 month warranty or none at all.
  • Spare parts for old models. A 2000 Komatsu may be harder to get parts for than a 2018 model.
  • Lower energy efficiency. Older gasoline or LPG engines consume more than modern equivalents.
  • Risk of hidden costs. A machine with superficial inspection can generate costs in the first year that exceed the savings on purchase.

Advantages of a new forklift

  • Full warranty - 12-24 months on electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical components
  • Modern technology - Li-ion batteries reduce consumption and increase precision
  • Zero emissions (electric) - mandatory for food, pharmaceutical warehouses or those without ventilation
  • Guaranteed parts availability - the manufacturer ensures parts for at least 10 years
  • You know exactly what you're buying - 0 operating hours, no accidents, no hidden wear and tear

Direct comparison: refurbished vs. new

Criterion Refurbished (2T gasoline/LPG) New electric HELI (1.8T Li-ion)
Estimated price 6,000-10,000 EUR 14,900-18,000 EUR
Availability Immediate (in stock) 4-12 weeks
Warranty 3-6 months (variable) 12-24 months
Energy cost/hour 1.2-1.8 EUR (gasoline/LPG) 0.35-0.60 EUR (electric)
CO2 emissions Present (indoor with ventilation) Zero (indoor any)
Remaining lifespan Unknown / variable 15+ years (from 0)
Risk of hidden costs Medium-high Minimal
Investment recovery 1-2 years 3-5 years

7 things to check before buying a refurbished forklift

  1. Request the technical overhaul document. A serious seller provides a report with a list of replaced parts. Without the document, the risk is yours.
  2. Check the operating hours on the counter. Under 3,000 hours = excellent. 3,000-6,000 hours = good. Over 8,000 hours = pay attention to engine condition.
  3. Test the hydraulic system under load. Raise the mast to maximum height with nominal weight and hold for 2-3 minutes. If it visibly lowers, the cylinders are leaking.
  4. Check the wear of the lifting chains. Elongated or rusty chains are a danger. Standards require replacement at an elongation of 2% from the nominal length.
  5. Inspect the frame and mast for additional welds. Welds on the main structure can indicate previous accidents.
  6. Test the brakes at normal speed. Accelerate to normal speed, then brake sharply. The forklift should stop straight, without lateral deviation.
  7. Check the availability of spare parts. Find out if the air filter, hydraulic pumps, and seals for that model are available in Moldova or Romania.
HandlerKraft Tip

The most important red flag: the seller refuses to let you test it under load or rushes the decision process. A machine in good condition can always withstand a full test. Ask for time, test properly, and don't buy under pressure.

When to choose refurbished and when to choose new: 5 scenarios

  1. Budget under 10,000 EUR and standard needs - refurbished. For a single shift per day and non-perishable goods, a seriously inspected second-hand Komatsu or Toyota does an excellent job.
  2. Food, pharmaceutical warehouse, or without ventilation - new electric. Environmental regulations exclude internal combustion engines. There is no acceptable compromise.
  3. Urgent need (delivery under 2 weeks) - refurbished in stock. If you can't wait 2-3 months for a new machine, refurbished stock solves the problem immediately.
  4. Intensive use, 2+ shifts per day - new. For intensive use, the operating cost of the old engine plus the risk of breakdowns outweigh the savings on purchase.
  5. Seasonal project or testing a new workflow - refurbished or rental. It makes no sense to immobilize 15,000 EUR for a 4-month season.

Conclusion: both options are correct - in the right context

A refurbished forklift is not a compromise choice, but a smart financial decision in the right scenarios. If you know what you're buying, who you're buying from, and how to check, you can get reliable performance at half the cost of a new machine.

A new forklift has clear long-term advantages: lower operating costs, full warranty, and no surprises. If you operate intensively, have strict environmental requirements, or want the peace of mind that the equipment will not let you down in the middle of a busy season, new is the right investment.

The best advice: calculate the total cost over 5 years - purchase + energy + estimated maintenance - for both options. Often, the difference is smaller than it seems at first glance.
