Why “industrial racking” isn't a single product
Industrial warehouse racking systems have nothing in common with the light metal shelving or Profi Lux shelving in the HandlerKraft range for garages, workshops or small shops — those are designed for manual storage, with loads of up to 200 kg per shelf. The systems described here are industrial structures 4 to 12+ metres high, engineered for full pallets and forklift handling.
Within this category there are six completely different systems in the HandlerKraft range — Selective, Drive-In, Cantilever, Mezzanine, Cash&Carry and shelf-type — and each solves a different storage problem. The wrong choice doesn't just mean money spent unnecessarily, but a warehouse that doesn't work the way you need it to — blocked access to stock, wasted space or a slower workflow.
Selective pallet racking — direct access to every pallet
The core system of any modern warehouse. Each pallet is stored and retrieved individually by forklift, without moving any other pallets — full FIFO access to every SKU at any time.
- Upright frames and horizontal beams adjustable in height, compatible with any truck — counterbalance forklift, reach truck or order picker
- Protection included: corner guards, upright base guards, beam safety locks
- Works in buildings from 4 m up to 12+ m clear height
- Modular structure, extendable in length and height
Suitable for: logistics, distribution, production warehouses, 3PL operators, retail with bulky stock, food and cold-storage industries.
Drive-In racking — maximum storage density
The forklift drives straight into the rack lane, placing pallets on side rails along the full depth of the block — up to 80–85% more storage than selective racking on the same floor area. The price of that density is limited access: you can't pull a pallet from the middle of a lane without moving others.
- Access from one end (Drive-In, LIFO logic) or both ends (Drive-Through, FIFO)
- Side guide rails with protective profiles for the forklift legs
- Configurable lane depth: from 3 to 10+ pallets per lane
- Compatible with standard counterbalance forklifts (external aisle of about 3.5 m)
Suitable for: homogeneous or slow-moving products — seasonal stock, raw materials, cold stores or freezers, manufacturers with large batches on small floor areas.
Drive-In isn't a “better” version of Selective — it's a trade-off. You gain density and lose direct FIFO access to each pallet. If you sell with fast rotation across many different SKUs, Drive-In will make your operation harder, not easier.
Cantilever racking — for long and bulky materials
With vertical columns and open arms, and no front uprights to obstruct loading, cantilever racking is the only suitable solution for pipes, metal profiles, bars, beams, panels and irregularly shaped materials — goods that no pallet system can store efficiently.
- Arms sized to the length and weight of the materials
- Single-sided (against a wall) or double-sided (central areas) versions
- Modular structure, extendable as the business grows
- Fast access to goods and good visibility of stock
Suitable for: pipe, bar and metal profile warehouses, timber, board, panel and beam stores, factories, production workshops and building materials depots.
Mezzanine floor — double your floor area without extending the building
A freestanding load-bearing structure is installed inside your existing building, creating a fully functional technical floor — for storage, picking, offices or a light production line — with no new construction. It's the only system on this list that adds usable floor area rather than pallet positions.
- Self-supporting structure anchored to the existing floor slab, no new foundations
- 3–5× lower cost than extending the building
- Installation in 5–15 working days, without interrupting activity in the building
- Design load: 300 kg/m² up to 1,000+ kg/m² for intensive storage
- Demountable and relocatable structure, compliant with European standard EN 1090
Suitable for: upper-level shelf-type racking storage, a technical office or admin space above the storage area, a picking zone for e-commerce.
Cash&Carry system — warehouse and sales floor in one space
Designed for wholesale stores with heavy traffic, heavy goods and customers who pick up products themselves — the pallet comes down straight into the display area, with no re-handling between warehouse and sales aisle.
- Bottom level adapted for direct customer access, at an ergonomic height
- Upper levels for reserve stock, accessible by reach truck or forklift
- Replenishment by lowering pallets straight onto the sales level
- Requires a minimum clear height of 5–6 m and an aisle of at least 3.5 m
Suitable for: food and non-food wholesale stores, Cash&Carry warehouses and METRO/Selgros-type operators on a local scale, distributors who also sell retail.
Shelf-type racking — from boxes to industrial parts
Covers the widest range of storage needs — boxes, parts, packaged products, archives — with goods placed directly on the shelf, without pallets, and accessed by hand. Don't confuse this industrial system with the TI or Profi Lux series: capacity per shelf reaches 600+ kg, compared with a maximum of 200 kg on non-industrial metal shelving.
- Light-duty racking — up to 150 kg/shelf (archives, pharmacies, offices, small parts)
- Medium-duty racking — up to 300–400 kg/shelf (distribution warehouses, retail, workshops)
- Heavy-duty shelf-type racking — 600+ kg/shelf (industrial parts, building materials)
- Tool-free adjustable shelf spacing; modular configurations for long runs of racking
Suitable for: auto parts warehouses and component distribution, pharmacies, medical stores and laboratories, archives, production workshops and retail.
Head-to-head comparison: which system for which need
| System | Access logic | Storage density | Type of goods |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selective | FIFO, direct access to every pallet | Standard | Pallets, many different SKUs |
| Drive-In | LIFO (or FIFO with Drive-Through) | Very high (+80–85%) | Homogeneous pallets, slow rotation |
| Cantilever | Direct access, no lane constraints | Standard | Long materials: pipes, profiles, panels |
| Mezzanine | — | +100% usable area (new floor) | Anything — boxes, offices, picking |
| Cash&Carry | Direct sales + reserve | Standard | Full pallets, wholesale |
| Shelf-type | Manual access, no pallets | Standard | Boxes, parts, packaged goods |
How to choose: 4 key questions
- Do you store full pallets or individual items/boxes? Pallets → Selective, Drive-In, Cash&Carry, or Cantilever for long materials. Individual items, no pallets → Shelf-type racking.
- Do you need FIFO access to every SKU, or do you store homogeneous, slow-moving stock? Many SKUs with frequent access to each → Selective. Homogeneous stock, high volume, infrequent rotation → Drive-In for maximum density.
- Are you short of floor space rather than height? If the building has clear height available above current operations, a Mezzanine adds usable area at 3–5× less than a building extension.
- Do you sell directly from the warehouse, with customers picking up goods themselves? If so, Cash&Carry removes the re-handling between reserve and sales area — any other system forces an extra replenishment flow.
Why these systems have no catalogue price
Unlike light metal shelving or Profi Lux shelving, which are standard modules with a fixed price, none of the six systems above is sold "off the shelf" from a catalogue. Frame height, beam length, capacity per level, floor anchoring type and number of bays all follow from the real dimensions of your building, the type and weight of your goods and the applicable safety standards — which is why each system is configured and quoted individually, per project.
Conclusion
The six systems aren't variants of the same product but solutions to six different storage problems: access to every SKU (Selective), maximum density (Drive-In), long materials (Cantilever), extra floor area without construction (Mezzanine), direct sales from stock (Cash&Carry) or item-level storage without pallets (shelf-type). The right starting point isn't your budget, but the type of goods and the workflow in your warehouse.
